STUART COLLECTION. Vol. VIII (ff. 97). Collection of arms and historical memoranda, etc., formerly belonging to John Wodenoth or Woodnoth (d. 1634), antiquary, of Shavington Hall, co. Chest; 1596- circa 1634. Latin and English. Partly in the autograph of Wodenoth, who probably acquired the MS. in 1603 (cf. f. 12b). The names of the holders of the arms have been copied in a late 17th cent. hand in a large number of cases (cf. ff. 13-14). The arms, in trick, are entered on pages premarked with squares and shields and originally numbered pp. 1-185. A number of these pages are missing (i.e. pp. 35-38, 49-54, 75-80, 83-84, 93-100, 121-122, 179-180), and the remaining pages correspond to ff. 13-44, 47-74b, 76-92b of the present foliation. Ff. 28b, 30-44, 91b-92, 93 are blank. The contents are as follows.- (1) Historical and heraldic memoranda, epigrams, notes from printed books, epitaphs, etc., collected by Wodenoth. The following verses are included:- (a) 'O silly senceles men', attributed to George Wither. f. 95;- (b) 'The Brevity of Mans lyfe', attributed to Francis Bacon. f. 96;- (c) Anonymous poem beginning 'Saviour of Mankynde, Man, Emanuell'. f. 96b. ff. 7-12, 45b, 94-97.
