STUART COLLECTION. Vol. XI (ff. 64). Collection of arms, etc., by Samuel Waker; circa 1667. Autograph. Most of the arms are in trick, a few being painted. At f. 1 b is an engraved coat of arms granted to Thomas Maryet or Marriott of Remenham in 1586. The volume also contains the following poems, anonymous unless otherwise stated:-
(a) 'I will not loue on minute more I swear'. Possibly by Sir John Suckling (cf. L. A. Beaurline, 'The Canon of Sir John Suckling's Poems', Studies in Philology, lvii, 1960, pp. 500-501 ). f. 1;- (b)'Fairest creature tell mee true'. f. 9;- (c)'Cloris when ere you doe intend'. f. 38b;- (d) Elegies on Elizabeth Chadwell by her husband and her brother, Gerard Wood. ff. 46b-48;- (e) 'To litle or noe purpose haue I spent all my dayes', by Sir George Etherege; 1667. f. 49;- (f) 'The glories of our birth and State', by James Shirley; 1659. f. 50b;- (g)'Parthonope a City bright as Gold'. f.51;- (h) Verses entitled 'On the Chancellors Downfall', referring to Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon; circa 1667. f. 63b;- (i) 'Madam pox take you your bewitching beuty'. f. 64b. Also included are epitaphs on Frances, Countess of Hertford (d. 1598), and Mary, wife of Richard Mompesson (d. 1600), both being daughters of William, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham (f. 43b). At ff. 62b-63 are a series of mottoes, possibly from tombs (Latin and English translation).
