STUART COLLECTION. Vol. XX (ff. i + 31). Book of swanmarks of the Fenland and Broadland area of East Anglia; circa 1573- 1579. Vellum and paper. About 550 marks are recorded, with names of owners, indexed in a contemporary hand at ff. 1-4b. For a list of rolls of swan-marks, including a reference to 4977, see N. F. Ticehurst, The Mute Swan in England, 1957, pp. 76-79. This MS. may have been the property of Edward Clere of Blickling, co. Norf. (knt. 1578), whose swan mark is the first entered in the book (f. 5). He was Deputy Swan-Master for Norfolk and Suffolk in 1576 (see Ticehurst, p. 63). At f. 28 are notes on regulations governing swan keeping in the same hand as 4959. The title of the volume, with the date 1714, is also written in this hand (f. i). A note on f. i, by Sir Frederic Madden, states that the MS. was purchased in 1788, but according to a note by Madden in Add. MS. 5015, f. 119b, this MS. formed part of the collection of Stuart MSS. purchased in 1778.
