A small-size luxury prayerbook

This small-sized luxury prayerbook was produced in France around 1520, but apparently owned by an anonymous English woman in or before 1530. It features holograph inscriptions of King Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey addressed to her. The manuscript’s full-page illustrations are in the style of the French manuscript illuminator Jean Pichore (d. 1521) (see Backhouse and Giraud, Pierre Sala (1994)).
Contents:
ff. 2v-14v: Excerpts from the Gospels.
ff. 15v-23r: Psalms 85 (ff. 16r-19r) and 24 (ff. 19r-23r).
ff. 23v-69r: The Seven Penitential Psalms.
ff. 69v-71v: Suffrages to St George.
ff. 72v-74r: Suffrages to St Anthony.
Decoration:
8 full-page miniatures, in colours and gold. Their contents of these miniatures is as follows:
f. 1v: The Nativity (badly damaged).
f. 5v: St Luke, painting the Virgin, with an ox.
f. 9r: St Matthew, reading, with an angel holding a book.
f. 12v: St Mark, writing, with a lion at his feet.
f. 15v: The Crucifixion.
f. 23v: David in penitence, kneeling, with his harp and hat beside him, looking up to a red angel carrying a sword.
f. 69v: St George fighting the dragon
f. 72v: St Anthony of Egypt (badly damaged).
Large and small initials in gold on purple grounds. Line-fillers as branches, in gold and purple. All text pages framed in gold. Rubrics in gold.

Dimensions: 35 x 20 mm (text space: 25 x 15 mm)
Foliation: ff. 74 (+ 1 paper and 1 original parchment flyleaf at the beginning + 1 original parchment and 3 paper flyleaves at the end); f. [i]recto and f. [78]verso have been pasted together with red fabric gold-stamped with floral motifs; this fabric with the same decoration has been pasted on the insides of the upper and lower covers.
Script: Humanistic.
Binding: Pre-1600. Gold metal-work and red velvet, with clasps; gilt edges.

Provenance:
An unknown 16th-century English woman, owned in or before 1530: French inscriptions for her by King Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey on ff. 72r and 74v: 'en priant a saintte George…', and 'en priant a saint Anthonis…' (ff. 72r, 74v) (see Backhouse and Giraud, Pierre Sala (1994)).
Sir Hans Sloane (b. 1660, d. 1753), baronet, physician and collector. Purchased as part of the Sloane collection from Sloane's executors and incorporated into the newly founded British Museum in 1753.
