- Title:
- Roger Marbeck, An account of the taking of Cadiz, 1596
- Scope & Content:
-
Roger Marbeck, "A breefe and a true discourse of the late honorable voyage unto Spayne and the wynning, sacking and burning of the famous Towne of Cadiz there, and of the miraculous overthrowe of the Spanishe Navie at that tyme, with a reporte of all other Accidents thereunto appertayning, by Doctor Marbeck attending upon the person of the right honourable the Lorde highe Admirall of England all the tyme of the said Actione" (f. 2r).
Roger Marbeck (1536-1605), college head and physician, attended Charles Howard, 2nd Baron of Effingham, Lord Admiral in the campaign against Cadiz in 1596 by Howard and Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex. His account of the expedition was written in 1596 or 1597: it opens with Howard and Essex coming to Plymouth "in May last 1596" (f. 2r). It is written in a fine scribal hand, possibly his own. It was apparently intended for publication: on f. 3v Marbeck flags up "Note heere that if it shall be soe thought good in this place, the originall of her Ma[jes]ties declaration, as also their L[ordshi]ps whoe decrees maie at large be sett downe verbatim, as they weare published abroad by themselves." It was never published - there was a ban on books on the expedition. It survives in at least two fair copies. It also formed much of the text for the account in Richard Hakluyt, The principal navigations, voiages, traffiques and discoveries of the English nation made by sea or ouer-land, 3 vols (London: 1598-1600), I, 607-619 (STC: 12626; ESTC: S106744), an account itself suppressed in 1599.
Marbeck includes a prayer for the fortune of the expedition by Queen Elizabeth I that arrived whilst the fleet was in Plymouth Roads, ff. 5r-v, as well as his own translation of the prayer into Latin (ff. 5v-6r). Despite his praise for the excellence of the prayer, which he presumed to translate the very instant he heard it, he leaves open whether he thinks the Queen actually wrote it.
