'This is a part of Mr. Staine's letter to the Spanish Renegado Secretary, wrote and sent by the Alfaqueque, June 3/13, his excellency not thinking fitt himself to returne an answer to his excellency Guylan's letter, received by said Alfaqueque and said Mr. Jones, June 3/13.'

20. Declaration in behalf of the King of Great Britain, respecting an article of treaty with the Alkcayde of Arras. Dated Tangier, 22 Dec. 1665. Spanish. f. 14.

'Sent by the above named Hamet Beniafar, who departed hense on the 28th, instant, and carryed with him likewise a translation of this in Arabeck, which was don by a Moore called Mahamet Arnuse, whoe [came] with Mr. Jones upon the Ketch from Bozemos, sent as an agent from the Alcayde of Arras to treate of articles of peace and trade; which see in the following pages.'

21. Lord Belasyse to Senor Hamet Benhamet Alcayde of Arras, Lord of the ports of Bazemo Nangar and Mustafa, &c., expressing a desire of friendly intercourse and free commerce between them, and transmitting articles of a treaty, Dated Tangier, 16/26 December, 1665. Spanish. f. 15.

The messengers carried with them presents of powder, lances, muskets, and cable.
