- Title:
- John Dee's conferences with angels
- Scope & Content:
-
ff. 1r–169v: John Dee's conferences with angels, 22 December 1581–30 May 1583, in five books. It precedes the other conferences printed by Meric Casaubon in 1659. Elias Ashmole made a fair copy of this manuscript, which is now Sloane MS 3677. These are records of messages delivered by angels and other spirits, with the aid of a crystal ball.
Some leaves from the manuscript are missing; Ashmole recounts (ff. 2r–3r) that the maid of two former owners, Mr and Mrs Jones, used them to line pie dishes.
f. 1r: note about the contents of the volume.
ff. 2r–3r: Ashmole's preface explaining how the manuscript came into his possession.
ff. 4r–108r: Dee's conferences with angels.
ff. 109r–169v: Notes in cipher by William Shippen.
