- Ahdname
- Scope & Content:
-
This scroll contains a copy of an ahdname issued by I Sultan Ibrahim shortly after his accession to the throne, at the request of the Ambassador of King Charles I, Sir Sackvile Crow, in confirmation of the treaty granted by his antecedent III Sultan Murat to Queen Elizabeth I, renewed first by his grandfather III Sultan Mehmet, then by his father I Sultan Ahmet, at the request of King James I, and lastly by his brother II Sultan Osman, dated the beginning of Şa'ban 1051 AH (October 1641 CE).
The copy repeats at length the stipulations of the former treaty for the protection of English subjects traveling or trading in the Ottoman Empire, and the additional clauses appended to the same in the time of II Sultan Osman.
