Volvelle, with a set of instructions concerning its use
- Scope & Content:
-
A single parchment leaf featuring a circular volvelle on the recto, decorated in colours and gold, the verso originally blank.
The volvelle is comprised of several moveable parts arranged in concentric circles and fastened with a central pivot upon a base sheet marked with the hours of the day and the points of the compass, oriented with 'South' at the top. The first moveable disk features the yearly calendar divided into the calendar months and signs of the zodiac, together with scales to determine the length of a particular day and the noon altitude of the sun. The second and third disks feature large pointers indicating the relative positions of the sun and the moon, with a circular cutout in the third disk also used to simulate the moon's phases.
The volvelle is accompanied by a set of added rules or instructions concerning its use, written in Middle English, which appear above and below the central device.
