- Title:
- Grant by Aubrey de Vere and Isabel de Bolebec to Woburn Abbey of tenements in Warndon
- Scope & Content:
-
Grant by Aubrey de Vere (b. c. 1163, d. 1214] and Isabel de Bolebec (b. c.. 1164, d. 1245), for their souls and those of all their ancestors and heirs, to Woburn Abbey [Bedfordshire], of all their tenements in Warndon [Bedfordshire] pertaining to the fee of Bolebec, which Walter de Bolebec held; dated to between Aubrey’s marriage to Isabel in 1184 and his accession to the earldom of Oxford in 1194.
Woburn had been founded by Isabel’s relative Hugh de Bolebec (d. c. 1165) in 1145. Isabel should not be confused with her aunt, Isabel de Bolebec (b. c.. 1164, d. 1245), who married Aubrey’s brother, Robert de Vere (d. before 1221).
Endorsed: in a 13th-century hand, ‘Carta Albrici de Ver et Isabel / de Bolebec de Warndun'.
Affixed with an imperfect seal of Isabel, lozenge, brown, with a full-length image of a woman in a long dress, her left hand on her stomach, her right hand outstretched, with the fragmentary legend, ‘…ill …abele de bolebe…’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), II, p. 378).
