Acknowledgement by Marie, abbess of St Étienne’s Abbey, Soissons, to the Knights Templar of Mont-de-Soissons, that the abbey owes them two bushels of winter grain. In return, the Templars quitclaim all right to the tithes of Mariuas and Villeneuve.
Endorsed: in a 13th-century hand, ‘de labess de saint stephani / de bles et I de au-[illegible]’; in a 19th century hand, ‘Purch[ased] at Moore’s sale / 29 Apr[il] 1856 / Lot 347.’
Affixed with an imperfect seal of Marie, oval, green, showing the Stoning of St Stephen, with the saint kneeling in prayer, and a boy standing behind him, with the fragmentary legend, ‘s[an]c[t]I …epha…’. Reverse: an indistinct counterseal with a half-length portrait of St Stephen, with the fragmentary legend, ‘sa… …rvas’.
