Acknowledgement by Guy [de Dampierre, d. 1305], count of Flanders and marquis of Namur, and Isabeau [of Luxembourg, 1247-98], his wife, countess of Namur, of a debt to their clerk Raoul de Harcout of 150 gros livres tournois; dated 1294. The recto also features a summary of the charter's contents written in an 18th-century hand.
Endorsed: in a mid-19th century hand, ‘Ray’s sale / 26 July 1856 / /Lot 1005/’.
Affixed with four seals. The first, an imperfect equestrian seal of Guy, oval, brown, with the count armed and armoured on a horse, a lion rampant on his shield, with the fragmentary legend, ‘Gui… …landr…’. Reverse: a counterseal, with a heraldic shield with a lion rampant., and the fragmentary legend, ‘sg… …uidon comitis flandrie’.
The second, an imperfect seal of Isabeau, lozenge, brown, with a full-length image of Isabeau in a long dress and headdress, holding a fleur-de-lys in her right hand, her left hand on her chest, standing on a carved corbel, a heraldic shield on each side, on the right the lion rampant of Flanders and Namur, on the left the five bars a lion rampant of Luxembourg, with the legend, ‘s[igillum] elyzabeth comitisse namucensis’. Reverse: a counterseal, with a heraldic shield with a lion rampant, and the legend, ‘secret[um] e[lyzabeth] comitisse namucensis’.
The third, an imperfect equestrian seal of Robert de Dampierre, oval, brown, with Robert armed and armoured on a horse, a lion rampant on his shield, and the fragmentary legend, ‘si… …s flandri…’. Reverse: a counterseal, with a heraldic shield with a lion rampant, and the legend, ‘secretu[m] rob[er]ti comitis nivern[ensis]’.
The fourth, an imperfect equestrian seal of Guillaume de Dampierre, oval, brown, with Guillaume armed and armoured on a horse, a lion rampant on his shield, differenced with a bendlet or baton, with the legend, ‘sigillum guillelmi filii co… s… fland…’. Reverse: a counterseal, with a heraldic shield with a lion rampant, differenced with a bendlet or baton, with the legend, ‘[con]t[ra]s[igillum] g[uillelmi] filii comitis flandrie’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), V, pp. 534, 536, 543, 666).
