Grant by Matilda [illegitimate daughter of Henry II], abbess of Barking Abbey [Essex], at the petition of Geoffrey son of Baldwin, to Henry Lohot, for his service and homage to the abbey, of all the tenements that Geoffrey had in Tollesbury [Essex]. In return, Henry gives the abbey 4 marks of silver and the abbey gives Geoffrey 4s; dated to between 1175 and 1202, the earliest and latest possible dates of Matilda’s abbacy.
Affixed with a fragmentary seal of Matilda, lozenge, green, with a full-length image of the abbess in her habit, her right hand holding a staff, her left hand holding a book (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), I, p. 434).
