Adeliza of Louvain (b. c. 1103, d. 1151), widowed Queen of England and second wife of Henry I (r. 1100-1135), grants lands and a church in her manor of Stanton, Oxfordshire, to Reading Abbey, for the maintenance of the lights before the body of the King, buried in the abbey.
Witnessed by Hermann the chaplain and 13 others.
Given sometime between 1135 (the death of King Henry) and 1151 (the death of Adeliza). Probably issued around the time of a similar grant to Reading Abbey by Adeliza's second husband, William d'Aubigny, 1st earl of Arundel (d. 1176) (Add Ch 19586). William's grant contains many of the same witnesses and has been dated 1139 or 1140 (Warner & Ellis, Facsimiles of Royal & Other Charters, I (1903), p. 14 and plate X).
Endorsed: in a 12th-century hand, ‘Adelaidis regine de .c. solidatis t[er]re / in Stantona et ecclesia ei[us]de[m] manerii’; in a 19th-century hand, ‘Grant from Adelade / Queen of H[enry] 1st to / the Abbey of Reading’.
Affixed with Adeliza’s seal, appended by a thick thong of deer-skin. Full length representation of the Queen with a long dress, cloak fastened at neck, long sleeves, wearing crown of three points fleury, head-dress; standing on flat corbel and holding in right hand a sceptre with open trefoiled handle, the cruciform head surmounted by dove turned to right; in left hand an orb. The legend reads: + SIGILLVM AALIDIS SECVNDAE DEI GRATIA REGINA ANGLIAE (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), I, p. 98).
