Adeliza of Louvain (b. c. 1103, d. 1151), widowed Queen of England and second wife of Henry I (r. 1100-1135), orders Abbot E(dward) (fl. 1136–1154) and the convent of Reading Abbey not to alienate the church of Stanton, Oxfordshire, or any other of her grants to them.
Witnessed by Reinald (or Reginald) of Windsor.
Given at Arundel, sometime between 1138 (after Adeliza went to Arundel) and 1151 (when she died).
Endorsed: in a 12th-century hand, ‘Adeleidis regine ne eccl[es]ia / de Stantona mittant extra / d[omi]niu[m] n[ost]r[u]m’.
Affixed with Adeliza’s seal. Full length representation of the Queen with a long dress, cloak fastened at neck, long sleeves, wearing crown of three points fleury, head-dress; standing on flat corbel and holding in right hand a sceptre with open trefoiled handle, the cruciform head surmounted by dove turned to right; in left hand an orb. The legend reads: + SIGILLVM AALIDIS SECVNDAE DEI GRATIA REGINA ANGLIAE (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), I, p. 98).
