- Scope & Content:
-
Empress Matilda (b. 1102, d. 1167), daughter of Henry I, King of England (r. 1100-1135), confirms the grant to Reading Abbey of the land of Windsor, Berkshire, and Catteshall, Surrey, made by Geoffrey Purcell when he became a monk there, for the salvation of her own soul and that of her father, and with the consent of Geoffrey, Count of Anjou (her husband, b. 1113, d. 1151), Henry, her son (the future King Henry II), and her other sons; given at Reading, sometime between 2 February 1141 (the capture of Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln) and 25 July 1141 (before Miles the constable was created earl of Hereford) (Kemp, Reading Abbey Cartularies, I, p. 46).
Witnessed by Henry (of Blois), bishop of Winchester (r. 1129-1171), and ten others.
Endorsed in a 12th-century hand, ‘Matild[is] imp[er]at[ri]cis de t[er]ra Gaufr[edi] Purcell[i] de Windersor[es] et Cateshella; in an 18th-century hand, ‘to Rading in Berks’.
Formerly affixed with a seal, now lost, as indicated by the slits for a tag.
A copy of the document is recorded in the cartulary of Reading Abbey, Harley MS 1708, f. 17v. This charter has been suspected of being a forgery (Cronne & Davis, Regesta Regum Anglo-Normannorum (1968), III, p. 258).
