Empress Matilda (b. 1102, d. 1167), daughter of Henry I, King of England (r. 1100-1135), notifies A(lexander), bishop of Lincoln (r. 1133-1148), and the barons of Oxfordshire, of her confirmation of the grant of church of Stanton to Reading Abbey, originally granted by Queen A(deliza of Louvain) (b. c. 1103, d. 1151), wife of Matilda's father, and W(illiam d’Aubigny) (b. c. 1109, d. 1176), her husband.
Given at Reading, between March and May 1141 (Warner & Ellis, Facsimiles of Royal & Other Charters, I (1903), plate XIII, no. 20).
Witnessed by Bernard, bishop of St Davids, Robert, earl of Gloucester, and Humphrey de Bohun.
Endorsed: in a 12th-century hand,‘Mathill[dis] Imp[er]atricis de eccl[esi]a de Stant[ona] et om[n]ib[us] ad ea[n]de[m] eccl[esi]a[m] p[er]tinentib[us]’.
Formerly affixed with a seal, now lost.
A copy of the document is recorded in the cartulary of Reading Abbey, Harley MS 1708, f. 17r. For the original grant of Stanton to Reading by Adeliza of Louvain and William d’Aubigny, see Add Chs 19573 and 19586.
