Empress Matilda (b.1102, d. 1167), daughter of Henry I, King of England (r. 1100-1135), grants to Reading Abbey the town of Blewbury, Berkshire, for the souls of Henry, her father, and Matilda, her mother, and in acknowledgment of the service of Brian fitz Count (fl. 1125–1142).
Given at Devizes, sometime between 24 December 1143 (the death of Milo, Earl of Hereford) and 31 October 1147 (the death of Robert, Earl of Gloucester) (see Warner & Ellis, Facsimiles of Royal & Other Charters, I (1903), plate XIV, no. 22).
Witnessed by Robert, Earl of Gloucester, and ten others.
Endorsed: in a 12th-century hand, ‘M[athildis] imp[er]atricis de Bleb[er]ia’.
Formerly affixed with a seal, now lost, appended by a tag partially cut from the bottom of the parchment.
A copy of this document is recorded in the cartulary of Reading Abbey, Harley MS 1708, f. 17v. This charter is a contemporary duplicate of Add Ch 19577 (Way, ‘Contributions towards the History of Reading Abbey’, The Archaeological Journal, 20 (1863), p. 290).
