Chirograph by Agatha La Bernarde, widow of Lord Ralph Fitz Bernard, granting a grove to her daughter Johanna
- Scope & Content:
-
A chirograph of Agatha La Bernarde, widow of Lord Ralph Fitz Bernard, granting her daughter Johanna, a grove (gravam) called 'le sopperes wode'; given at ‘Elunder’ [possibly Ellenden, Kent?], the Sunday after the Translation of St Thomas the Martyr, 7 Edward II [8 July 1313].
Endorsed: in a late 14th-century hand, 'Agatha uxor d[o]m[ini] Rad[ulph]i fils Bernard[i].’; in a similar hand, ‘Tho. Derle.’
Affixed with an imperfect seal of Agatha la Bernarde, widow of Lord Ralph Fitz Bernard; a lozenge, red, showing a full-length image of Agatha wearing a long dress marked with a cross, a cloak, and a headdress. In each of her hands is a heraldic shield, one bearing the Fitz Bernard arms (r. vairé on a chief two mullets), the other possibly bearing the de la Lee arms (a cross chequy); a fleur-de-lys on either side (Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887), II, pp. 377-78).
