Grant by Matilda de Wateville to Bruern Abbey [Oxfordshire] of all her land and that of her father in Colesbourne [Gloucestershire], which Helias of Colesbourne had granted them there.
Endorsed: in a late 12th-century hand, ‘Calesburn / Matildis de Watervill / de t[er]ra q[uam] Elyas iniam tenuit’.
Affixed with an imperfect and indistinct seal of Matilda, lozenge, red, with a figure of a woman in a long dress, her right hand on her hip, with a fragmentary legend, ‘s…llum ma…alt de watevill’ (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), II, p. 403).

George James Finch-Hatton (b. 1815, d. 1887), 11th Earl of Winchilsea and 6th Earl of Nottingham, 1869.
Purchased by the British Museum from G. Richard Attenborough, 12 July 1873, together with Add Chs 19788-22613, for £1100. This followed an unsuccessful attempt to negotiate their purchase from the earl of Winchilsea in 1869.
