Chirograph containing an indenture between Margaret of Brotherton (b. c. 1322, d. 1399), Countess of Norfolk, and Bruisyard Abbey, Suffolk, on the one hand, and Sir Robert Carbevell on the other, regarding tenements in Babraham, Sawston, and Pampisford (Cambridgeshire), held for life by Roger of Benyngdon and Katherine his wife but of which the revocation is held by Robert Carbevell. The countess promises to secure a mortmain licence to allow Robert to grant these lands to the abbey.
Given at Framlingham, 6 July 1378.
Dorse: a 17th-century summary of the charter, written in English.
Affixed with two seals. The first, an imperfect and indistinct seal, possibly of Robert Carbevell, oval, red, with a heraldic shield surmounted by a helmet, foliage on either side. The second, an imperfect and indistinct seal of Bruisyard Abbey, a lozenge, red, featuring a depiction of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, with the Angel Gabriel on the left, holding a scroll bearing indistinct text, and on the right, the Virgin Mary, a book in her left hand, her right hand raised, surrounded by tracery, with a heraldic shield either side.
