Talbot: Notebook
- Scope & Content:
-
Notebook started in Worthing, contains a frontispiece carrying the title ('A. Cantor's new Commercial Memorandum Book') and three pages of printed text as well as some handwritten notes. 'Cantor's' on the frontispiece is crossed out twice and replaced by 'Carter's' in pencil.
Front to back: The notes contain travel notes (starting 1823-1825, though inscribed 'Worthing 4th February 1826' in the front cover) in England, France, Germany, Austria and Italy. Back to front: notebook contains mainly philology and etymology: 'Coincidences in Greek, English and German', 1823-26, consists of word lists and translations of words. 'Miscellanea Hebraica, Coptica, Aegyptiaca' includes notes on the relationship between Hebrew and Greek with Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Coptic and Hieratic. 'Champ.' refers to the French orientalist Jean-François Champillons and his discovery, the tri-lingual Rosetta stone.
