The notebook contains notes on Assyrian cuneiform text and the Greek language, and continues Add MS 88942/137.
The notebook begins: ‘[cuneiform] is a sign which has various values…’. It attempts decipherment and contains notes on lexicography and biblical history. Talbot translates whole lines of text, transcribes whole passages into Latin, and tries to decipher the meaning of single words within historical texts.
Some notes relate to Bellino Cylinder, named after the German philologist Karl Bellino. Bellino had copied the inscription for G. F. Grotefend, the earliest decipherer of cuneiform. The finely preserved clay cylinder (22502, K. 1680o), with its unusal hollow shape from Nineveh, was inscribed with an account of Sennacherib's first two campaigns (dated 702 BC).
Notebook started: 25 Feb 1856.
