Front to back: The front part of the notebook contains only three lines on 'Egyptian Archaeology' (1856), referring to the Lotus flower.
The back-to-front part (1857) contains an intermediate draft of the famous transcription and translation of the 'Inscription of Tiglath Pileser I', six weeks before Talbot proposed a common decipherment project of the inscription involving himself and three other scholars. Talbot had been given access to a clay cylinder from the reign of the Assyrian King Tiglath-Pileser I (1114 – 1076 BC), which had been discovered around this time. Talbot suggested that he and Rawlinson submit sealed comparative translations of the cylinder. In agreement with the Royal Asiatic Society, which approved of the idea, Hincks and the German-French scholar Jules Oppert were also invited to join the experiment. Numerous letters document the event. The panel invited by the Royal Asiatic Society declared the close agreement of the four translations.
Notebook started: 1 Oct 1856.
