- Title:
- Talbot: Notebook ('F')
- Scope & Content:
-
This notebook contains notes on astronomy (remarks on the solar spectrum and the observation of Saturn, 28 December 1828), mathematics (conic sections and cones, hyperbolas etc.) and various other notes. These include notes on a solution that leaves a prismatic film on glass, and notes on the 'Combination of Prisms' (17 January 1830), 'Arcs of the parabola', 'Capillary Attraction', notes on the curved water surfaces obtained in capillary tubes, on 'Thunderstorms' (which Talbot assumed are caused by electrical attraction), on 'Hyperbola and Ellipse', and notes on how 'To render a Solar Ray stationary'. The mathematical notes include 'On the property of numbers', symmetrical equations, and topics which were addressed in previous notebooks of this series. Talbot's geometrical understanding of conic sections is connected to his understanding of optics. In general, this notebook alternates between conic sections and optics. A few late entries are from January and February 1830. A few pages are cut out.
Notebook started: 29 Jun 1828, Lacock. Designated 'F' on outside and inside front cover.
