- Title:
- Household roll of Katherine de Norwich
- Scope & Content:
-
The household roll of Katherine de Norwich (d. c. 1341-1343), containing a set of accounts produced in her household. Katherine de Norwich was the daughter of Sir John de Hethersett, and the widow respectively of Piers Braunche (d. 1296) and Walter de Norwich (d. 1329).
The first five membranes contain a day-to-day continuous record of the expenses of Katherine de Norwich’s household in food and provisions, known as a ‘diet account’. The account runs from 29 September (Michaelmas) 1336 (10 Edward III) to 10 April 1337 and is incomplete, as it would have continued to the end of the accounting year on Michaelmas 1337. Each entry includes the items and prices paid in cash, the corn and stock drawn from demesne manors, as well as items drawn from the stock of the household. It also records the expense of feeding thirteen paupers each day, as well as the cost of feeding the horses. The grand cash totals for each membrane are recorded at the foot of each dorse. The account was compiled by a single hand (see Household Accounts, ed. Woolgar (1992), I, p. 178).
The sixth and last membrane contains a ‘stock account’. This records an annual account of stock and other consumables purchased in bulk for Katherine’s household, and it covers the whole accounting year from Michaelmas 1336 to Michaelmas 1337.
For an edition and translation of this roll, see Household Accounts, ed. Woolgar (1992), I, pp. 179-227.
