Notarised copy of the divorce of Alexander Stewart (b. 1454, d. 1485), duke of Albany, and Lady Katherine Sinclair. This was part of an attempt to secure the succession of Albany's son from his second marriage, John Stewart.
John Otterburn, official of St Andrews in the archdeaconry of Lothian grants a divorce on the grounds of consanguinity in the fourth degree. Given at St Giles, Edinburgh, 9 March 1477 [1478]; copied by Sir George Newton, notary public and scribe, on the orders of William Wawane, chancellor of Ross; given at Edinburgh, 26 July 1515 and bearing Newton's notary mark.
Endorsed: in a 17th-century hand, 'Decritt of divorcement betwixt / the diuk of albanie and his wyff / 26 Julii 1515.’
