Material: Lead. The state of preservation of the seal hinders the description of the iconography and the reading of the inscription: the comparison between the modern photo and the image published by W. de Gray Birch shows a dramatic decay of the seal, which has now lost important parts on both sides and has been restored. The description of the iconography and the reading of the inscription has been established on the basis of Birch's catalogue, of the parallel seals, of the existing bibliography and of the electrotypes (Seal CXII 161-162).
Dimensions: Diameter 25 mm.
- Custodial History:
- Origin: Eastern Mediterranean.
Provenance: Andronicus Ducas, 2nd-3rd third of the 12th century.
Acquired in 1873.
