Decoration:
79 large historiated initials (one more missing), in colours and gold, at the beginnings of biblical books. Large foliate initials, in colours and gold, at the beginnings of prologues, etc. Small initials alternately red or blue, flourished in the other colour, and with red and blue 'I'/'J'-shaped decoration, at the beginning of chapters. Chapter-numbers and running-titles in alternate red and blue characters. Marginal drawing of the Tower of Babel, next to Genesis 1:11 (f. 8v).

Dimensions: 290 x 190 mm (text space 205 x 125 mm) in two columns.
Foliation: ff. i + 574 (ff. i and 573-574 are flyleaves).
Collation: i-ii16 (ff. 2-33), iii20 (ff. 34-53), iv-ix16 (ff. 54-149), x16-1 (15th leaf excised; ff. 150-164), xi-xvi16 (ff. 165-260), xvii-xxxii16 (ff. 261-516), xxxiii8-1 (8th leaf excised, probably blank; ff. 517-523); xxxiv20 (ff. 524-543), xxxv14 (ff. 544-557), xxxvi16-3 (14th-16th leaves missing, probably blank; ff. 558-570), xxxvii2 (ff. 571-572). The leaf excised between ff. 163 and 164 contained the end of II Kings and the start of I Chronicles.
Script: Gothic.
Binding: Post-1600. Red morocco with gilt covers and spine; edges gilt; marbled endpapers; 18th century. The first and last leaves preserve traces of a previous binding.

Provenance:
Unidentified owner, third quarter of the 13th century?: miscellaneous notes (ff. 571-572) include a list of kings of France down to Louis IX (reigned between 1226 and 1270) (f. 572r).
Unidentified owner: the lower margins of ff. 2 and 3 excised, presumably to remove ownership inscriptions.
Unidentified owner, 15th century: a quotation from Vergil's Aeneid book II is added in a humanistic hand (f. 192r).
Unidentified owner, 17th century?: inscribed with a six-line description of contents (f. 4v).
Ralph Palmer (b. 1668, d. 1745/6), barrister, of Little Chelsea.
Ralph Palmer (b. 1712, d. 1755), barrister, of Little Chelsea: inscribed ‘Bibliotheca Palmeriana, / Londini, 1747’, partly erased, followed by a four-line description of the manuscript, signed 'RP' (f. 1r).
Ralph Verney (b. 1714, d. 1791), 2nd Earl Verney, politician, Palmer’s cousin: with his book-plate, engraved by [William] Darling of [Great] Newport Street [fl. 1769-1799]); see Add. MS 33244, which also has the Palmeriana inscription and Verney bookplate.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
