Decoration:
Large foliate initials in colours and gold, with a green framing line, at the beginning of the volume and Genesis (ff. 2r, 4v). Large puzzle initials in red and blue, with red and blue infill and flourishing, at the beginning of the other biblical books, Psalm divisions, and some prologues. Small initials alternately red or blue, with flourishing in the other colour, at the beginning of chapters, prologues, and Psalms. Chapter numbers and running-titles in characters alternately red and blue. Occasional marginal drawings, e.g. a pair of scales (f. 68r)

Foliation: ff. i + 442 + 355*-355**** (ff. i, 1, and 441-442 are parchment flyleaves).
Collation: i-xv20 (ff. 2-301), xvi22 (ff. 302-323), xvii-xviii18 (ff324-355****), xix-xxii20 (ff. 356-435), xxiii five (structure uncertain; ff. 436-440).
Script: Gothic, written 'below top line'.
Binding: Post-1600. Polished calf, with 'De la bibliotheque de la Chevaliere d'Eon' in gilt capitals on the front cover; the edges of the leaves yellow; marbled endpapers; rebacked.

Origin: England or France.
Provenance:
Unidentified English owner, 15th century: with his added marginal notes throughout; in English on f. 228v, and in Latin filling most of f. 438v; erased ownership(?) inscription (f. 2r, partly obscured by a British Museum ink stamp).
Unidentified owner, 16th century: inscribed 'Si deus pro nobis, quis contra nos' (Romans 8:31; f. 2r); this was used as a motto by Philipp Melanchthon (b. s.1497 d. s.1560), the Caldicote family, and others.
? Walter Balcanquhall (b. 1548 d. 1616): 'Walterus Balcanquall', 16th century (effaced, f. 2r); the signature of his son, of the same name, occurs in Royal 7 F IX, f. 27.
Charles Geneviève Louis Auguste André Timothée, Chevalier D'Éon de Beaumont in the French nobility (b. 1728, d. 1810), diplomatist and transvestite: 'De la Bibliotheque de la Chevalière d'Eon' (front cover and f. 1r), and with other usual d'Éon markings; in his sale, part 5, 5 May 1791, lot 4, bought by Burney.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
