- Title:
- Bible with prologues, and Interpretations of Hebrew names, Isidore of Seville, Etymologiae 5:39: De descriptione temporum ('The Six Ages of the World'), and other texts
- Scope & Content:
-
Bible with prologues (ff. 4r-579v), and Interpretations of Hebrew names (ff. 580r-627v), Isidore of Seville, Etymologiae 5:39: De descriptione temporum ('The Six Ages of the World') (ff. 3r-3v, 628r), Chapter lists of biblical books from Genesis to Hebrews (ff. 628v-635v).
Chapters start on new lines and chapter numbers are set into the text area. The Psalms have the eight-part divisions.
There is an added inscription of uncertain date in Hebrew starting 'Acquire knowledge and do good' (f. 2r). The script and vowels are well done, but the grammar is bad, as are the letter-forms -- on the last line the word 'Amen' has been miswritten as the word for oil.
A parchment bookmark is loose between ff. 568r and 569r.
Decoration:
9 large historiated initials, in colours and gold, at the beginning of the general prologue, Genesis, and other biblical books (ff. 4r, 7v, 126v, 187r, 290r, 333r, 424r, 447r, 522r). Large initials, in colours and gold, at the beginning of the remaining biblical books (ff. 31r, 50v, 63v, etc.). Puzzle initials in red and blue, with flourishing in both colours and 'I'/'J' decoration in both colours, at the beginning of prologues. Small initials in red or blue, with flourishing in the other colour, and 'I'/'J' decoration in both colours, at the beginning of chapters and Psalms. Chapter numbers and running titles in alternate red and blue characters.

- Custodial History:
-
Origin: France, Central (Paris?).
Provenance:
Unidentified owner: the lower margin of f. 8r is excised, presumably to remove an ownership inscription.
Jean Rochier, abbot from 1452 of the Cistercian abbey of St Mary, Bellebranche, founded 1150/2, diocese of Laval, W. France: 'Istam bibliam emit fra/ter Johannes Rochier, / Abbas de Bellabrancha / Cuius anima in pace / requiescat. Amen', f. 579v).
Unidentified owner, 1458?: 'Decima decembris 1458. P(er) solu(tum?) frat(re?) Stephano Deon ord(inis) fr(atru)m p(redica)t(orum) … isti(us) biblia qua(m) h(ab)em(us). Teste J. A.(?) [perhaps an abbreviation of 'Abbas'] de bellebr. R.(?) [i.e. Rochier?]' (f. 2r); the name 'Deon' appears to have been added over an erasure.
Unidentified French owner, 16th century(?): 'Plequy'(?) followed by a paraph (f. 491r).
Charles Geneviève Louis Auguste André Timothée, Chevalier D'Éon de Beaumont in the French nobility (b. 1728, d. 1810), diplomatist and transvestite: 'De la bibliotheque de la Chevaliere D'Eon' in gilt on the front cover, and his transcription of the inscription on f. 2r (f. 1r): possibly in his sale, 12 February 1813, lot 19 ('Biblia Sacra Manuscript in a very minute character').
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
