This manuscript was most likely written around the mid-12th century in France. It contains the Book of Proverbs and the Book of Ecclesiastes with marginal and interlinear glosses.
Contents:
ff. 1r-22r: A prologue to the Book of Proverbs (glossed).
ff. 22r-74r: The Book of Proverbs (glossed).
ff. 74v-101v: The Book of Ecclesiastes (glossed), with prologues.
The manuscript contains a number of added texts and inscriptions:
f. 103v: Sedulius (fl. 450), a poem on the four Evangelists and their symbols, added in the 12th or 13th century: ‘Hoc Matheus agens hominem generaliter implet / Marcus ut alta fremit vox per deserta Leonis / Jura sacerdotis lucas tenet ore iuvenci [sic] / More volans aquile verbo petit astra iohannes’.
f. 103v: A poem on the Three Marys, added in the 12th or 13th century: ‘Anna tribus · ioachim · cleope · salomeque maria[s] / Tres parit · has ducunt · ioseph · alpheus · zebede[us] / Christum prima ioseph · iabocum cum simone iudam / Altera que sequitur · iacobum parit atque iohannem’.
f. 103v: A 12th- or 13th-century note: ‘Iste liber continet tres libros’, followed by an erased inscription.
[ff. i recto-viii verso, 101* recto, 101* verso, 102r-104v, 103* recto, and 103* verso are blank, except for a few additional notations].
Decoration:
Large initials in green, yellow or blue with some penwork decoration (containing foliate/arabesque motifs) in an opposing colour (yellow, green or red) or the same colour (ff. 1r, 22r, 57v). Medium-sized initials in blue, red or yellow. Small initials in red, green or blue but only as far as f. 74v. Capitals in marginal gloss highlighted in red (until f. 21r). Titles and roman numerals in the margins have been rubricated.

Dimensions: 215 x 150 mm (text space: approximately 150 x 115 mm, in 3 columns; 135 x 40 mm, in a single column; text without gloss between ff. 24v-72v).
Foliation: ff. i-viii + ff. 104 + f. 101* + f. 103*; ff. i-ii and f. 103* and f. 104 are modern paper flyleaves; ff. iii-viii, 101*, 102, and 103 are parchment flyleaves; a modern paper with an 'Index' has been pasted on f. 104r. Modern pagination throughout the manuscript (crossed out).
Collations: i6 (ff. i-vi); ii-xiiii-8 (ff. 1-103).
Script: Protogothic.
Binding: Post-1600. Brown blind-tooled and -stamped (nine columns of eight-pointed stars in circles at the centre and a full border of foliate decoration on the upper and lower covers) brown calf leather; Burney’s bookplate (‘CODEX BURNEIANUS’) gold-stamped at the centre of the upper and lower covers; the inside of the upper and lower covers has been gold-tooled; re-backed in 1962 and the spine inscribed in gold at the British Museum: ‘PROVERBS AND ECCLESIASTES WITH COMMENTARY’; a blue ribbon bookmark has been attached.

Provenance:
An unidentified ?13th-century ?English owner: his name perhaps inscribed in pencil on f. 78v: 'Thomas amee' pertinet' (?) [all but 'Thomas' uncertain]. Perhaps his marginal annotations in ink throughout the manuscript.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D. D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
