This 12th-century manuscript contains the Gospel of Mark with interlinear and marginal Gloss. The manuscript’s provenance suggests that it was most likely produced in England.

Decoration:
3 large initials in blue, red, or blue and red (puzzle initial) with arabesque penwork decoration in red and blue (ff. 1r, 2r, 89v). Display script in red and blue. Paraph marks in brown ink, sometimes with minor foliate decoration.

Dimensions: 245 x 225 mm (text space: 190 x 60 mm, in 1 column [f. 1r]; 250 x 175 mm, in 3 columns).
Foliation: ff. iv + 114 (+ 4 unfoliated modern paper flyleaves at the beginning); ff. i-iv and ff. 112-114 are modern paper leaves; a paper pastedown on f. 114 (note on foliation); 1 parchment stub between f. 1 and f. 2. Dried plant materials are in the gutter between f. 98 and f. 99.
Collation: i8-1 (2nd leaf excised; ff. 1-7), ii-xvi8 (ff. 8-111).
Script: Protogothic.
Binding: Post-1600. Red leather binding with red velvet; Burney’s bookplate blind-stamped on the upper and lower covers, the spine inscribed in gold: ‘EVANGELIUM SECUNDUM S. MARCUM. CUM GLOSSIS’; gilt foredge; marbled endpapers.

Provenance:
?Lichfield Cathedral, Staffordshire, owned in the ?13th century: Perhaps its ownership inscription in the upper margin of f. 1r: 'Liber ewang[e]l[ium] [secundum] mar[cum] glosat[um] [e]ccl[es]ie [? lich.]'; a glossed Mark was recorded at Lichfield by Patrick Young in c.1622.
'John Stout', owned in the ?16th century: his name inscribed in the lower margin of f. 9r.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D. D., classical scholar: his bookplate blind-stamped on the upper and lower covers. Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney's library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
