Foliation: ff 366. Two unfoliated modern paper flyleaves at the beginning and one at the end. ff 359-366 are also modern paper.
Dimensions: 315 x 220 mm.
Ruling: 225 x 130 mm. 29 lines.
Binding: Post-1600. Parchment over pasteboard with Greek-style gold-tooled border and central double-S monogram on upper and lower boards, last quarter of the 18th century; gilt edges.
Scribe: (ff 1r-45v, 54r-63v, 73r-88v, 97r-116v, 118v-358r) identified as the scribe of Escorial MS gr. 138 (ex-info. Mark Sosower).
Decoration: Numerous drawings, usually painted in some combination of yellow, red, green and/or grey (ff 5r, 5v, 7r, 7v, 8r, 9r, 14r, 15r, 16r, 16v, 17v, 18r, 18v, 19r, 22r, 24r, 25r, 26r, 26v, 27r, 28r, 29r, 30v, 32r, 33r, 35r, 35v, 36v, 2 x 27r, 37v, 38r, 38v, 39v, 40r, 2 x 40v, 41r, 41v, 43r, 43v, 44r, 45r, 45v, 47r, 47v, 48r, 49r, 49v, 50r, 50v, 51v, 52r. 2 headpieces of a woven pattern (ff 1r, 99r). ? John Spencer Smith, minister plenipotentiary to Turkey: sale catalogue notices that the manuscript was 'collected by one of His Majesty's Foreign Minsters at the Island of Patmos, in the Archipelago' (ff 359r, 361r, 363r); 'SS' monogram (upper and lower boards of the binding).
Unidentified owner: included in an anonymous sale at King and Lochée, 24 February 1810, purchased by Burney: note (f 359v).
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
