- Custodial History:
-
Origin: Eastern Mediterranean.
Provenance:
Frederic Sluisken, Curiae Hollandiae praeses, owned in the late 17th century: collated by Perizonius for his 1701 edition of Aelian (Dilts 1965, p. 67).
Peter Bardon, owned in the early 18th century: collated by Gronovius for his 1731 edition of Aelian (Dilts 1965, p. 68).
Richard Mead (b. 1673, d. 1754), physician and collector of books and art: bequeathed to Askew.
Anthony Askew (b. 1722, d. 1774), physician and book collector: his sale, 7 March 1785, lot 574, purchased by Wodhull. By this point the original manuscript had been divided into two codices. The other volume, containing the Varia Historia of Aelian (lot 543) was also purchased by Wodhull, and was sold as part of the Severne sale of items collected by Wodhull (Sotheby's, 11 January 1886, lot 14). It was there bought by Bernard Quaritch for Prince Mavrocordato, but does not appear to have passed to the National Library in Athens with Mavrocordato's other manuscripts (Dilts 1965, p. 68).
Michael Wodhull (b. 1740, d. 1816), book collector and poet (his bibliographical notes, ff. 3, 300): his sale, 3 March 1801, lot 521.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
