Decoration:
Decorated with initials in gold with white vine-stem ornament on a deep blue ground (ff. 1r, 10r, 37r, 46v, 50r, 58r, 63v, 70v, 74v, 81r, 91v, 99v, 113r), the lower margin of the first page with similar ornament enclosing an escutcheon with the Gonzaga arms (as in Burney MS 153; see Meroni 1966, p. 37 no. 5).

Dimensions: 250 x 165 mm (text space 165 x 100 mm), in 24 lines. Ruled in leadpoint.
Foliation: ff. iii + 125 (ff. i-iii and 125 are Askew flyleaves, ff. 123-124 are original flyleaves). Burney pagination 1-241.
Collation: i-xv8 (ff. 1-120), xvi4-1 (4th leaf cancelled; ff. 121-123), followed by a medieval flyleaf.
Script: Written ‘below top line’ in humanistic script; spaces left for rubrics.
Binding: Post-1600. Typical Askew binding of diced polished brown leather, with the usual ‘palmette and fleur-de-lis’ gilt roll, marbled endpapers and parchment flyleaves; edges gilt (cf. Burney MS 144).

Provenance:
A member of the Gonzaga family after 1433: with the family's arms as used between 1433 and 1530 (f. 1r); foliated and inscribed 'scrite 122', 15th century (f. 123r; cf. Burney MS 159, also with the Gonzaga arms).
? Mario Maffei (b. 1463, d. 1537): inscribed 'No. 325.', 18th century (f. 1r; cf. Burney MSS 144 and 160, both of which are Maffei manuscripts).
Anthony Askew (bap. 1722, d. 1774), physician and book collector: bound for him; his sale at Leigh and Sotheby's, 7 March 1785, lot 449 (the catalogue states ‘olim Maffeianus’), bought by Marsh for £3.
Charles Marsh (b. 1735, d. 1812), F.S.A.; his sale, Christie’s, 1 February 1816, lot 979.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
