Aulus Gellius, Noctes Atticae (ff. 1r-172r), followed (ff. 172r-173v) without break by the preface; added anonymous alphabetical index, on paper (ff. 174r-189v).
Decoration:
Decorated with a faceted initial enmeshed in knotwork designs, in colours on a gold field with cusped edges (f. 2r), the other books usually with a six- to eight-line initial in gold with white vine-stem ornament on a dark red, blue, and green ground (ff. 15v, 29r, 37v, 45v, 54v, 61r, 72r, 80v, 90v, 97v, 106r, 118r, 125v, 133v, 141v, 153r, 159r, 166v); three-line initials at the start of the capitula lists in gold on red and blue grounds; two-line initials alternately plain red or blue.
Headings in dark red-purple capitals.

Material: Parchment and paper.
Dimensions: 300 x 185 mm (text space 200 x 110 mm), in 37 lines. Ruled in brown leadpoint.
Foliation: ff. iii + 193 (ff. i-iii, 190-193 are flyleaves). Burney pagination 1-346.
Collation: i-xvii10 (ff. 1-170), xviii4-1 (last leaf missing, probably blank; ff. 171-173), xix10 (ff. 174-183), xx6 (ff. 184-189). Catchwords.
Script: Humanistic cursive, written 'below top line'. Greek passages written in spaces left by the main scribe, and glossed in Latin in the adjacent margin in pale red.
Binding: Post-1600. 18th-century binding of dark purple morocco; the edges of the leaves gilt; the first leaves with holes at the fore-edge caused by the nails of a pair of clasps of a former binding.
Flyleaves watermarked with the arms of Amsterdam and the letters ‘J T’.

Provenance:
Annotated by a number of 15th- (and 16th-?)century hands, one of whom uses a distinctive manicule, sometimes upside down, with an elaborate cuff and double lines to mark two joints of the pointing index finger (e.g. ff. 5r, 7r); another writes a minute script (e.g. f. 34v), refers to other works by chapter number (including Lorenzo Valla’s ‘In elegantiis’, f. 76v), and has inserted an inscribed slip of paper (f. 26r); a third writes Greek (e.g. f. 2v).
Maffeo Pinelli (b. 1735, d. 1785), of Venice: inscription '7943', f. 1r, upper left corner, corresponding to his inventory number, see Morelli 1787, no. 7943; his sale, Edwards, 2 March 1789, lot 12849, bought by Edwards for £5 5s.
James Edwards (b. 1756, d. 1816), book collector and bookseller: his sale catalogue 1790 no. 381; inscribed '10.10' in pencil (f. ii recto; cf. Burney MSS 15 and 182).
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
