- Custodial History:
-
Origin: France, Central? (Paris?)
Provenance:
Written for Jean Binel (d. 1491), judge (1473) and mayor (1486-1487) of Anjou: with a detailed scribal colophon: 'Arietis diuo fauente num(in)e luce tercia Anno incarnac(i)o(n)is do(mini)ce mille(si)mo quadringente(si)mo sexagesimo tercio. Est hic Valerii maximi historiographi complete graficatus liber pro [… two and a half lines erased …] D(omi)no meo colendissi(m)o mag(ist)ro Johanne binel arciu(m) mag(ist)ro ac in legibus licenciato. Me Johanne dauarant et si fas de seip(s)o talia fari foret, arciu(m) mag(ist)ro legu(m) baccalario et tu(n)c t(em)p(o)ris in fructuu(m) universitate amplissi(m)a pro norma(n)nor(um) natione procuratore. Manib(us) protrahente; Dei genitrici laudes. Amen.' (f. 179v); signed 'Pro Iohanne binel legum minime doctore Binel' (f. 181r).
Gilles Ménage (b. 1613, d. 1692), grammarian and lexicographer, son of Guillaume Ménage, king's advocate at Angers: an armorial bookplate records his gift to the Jesuits at Paris: 'Ex libris quos Domui Professæ Parisiensi Soc. Iesu testamento reliquit vir Clarissim: D. Ægidius Menagius Patritius Andegavensis. vir Inter Literatos Eruditissimus. Anno 1692' (f. 1r).
The Jesuits at Paris: inscribed 'Domus Professæ Parisiensis Societatis Jesu' (f. 2r); a note in French on the provenance of the manuscript, between 1765 and 1798, ends '… en 1765 il appartenoit a la maison professe des jesuites a paris' (f. 1v), therefore not in their 1764 sale.
Samuel Pegge (b. 1704, d. 1796), Church of England clergyman and antiquary; his sale, 29 March 1798, lot 2074.
Inscribed in ink with a price(?)-code 'cmino' (or 'cmmo'?) (f. 182r, top right; cf. Burney MS 148).
Unidentified owner: in the anonymous sale, Christie's: Catalogue of a Very Valuable Assemblage of MSS … Lately Collected by a Gentleman on the Continent, 20 May 1815, lot 48, bought by Burney for £10.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
