Ovid, Heroides with glosses

A medieval copy of Ovid's fictitious letters of classical heroines. The manuscript contains extensive marginal and interlinear glosses, one gloss (f. 22v: 'exprobare - reprecher') is in French. Epistola 15 is missing and the manuscript breaks off at Epistola 21.12, as is common in other medieval copies.
Contents:
ff. 1r-44v: Ovid, Heroides, with extensive marginal and interlinear glosses, begins 'P. Naso Ovidus Heroydos epystola prima....' ends '...Quos vereor paucos ne velit esse mihi. Explichit [sic] liber epistolarum'.
Decoration:
Initials alternately blue with red pen-flourishing, or vice versa. Headings in red in ornamental capitals.

Dimensions: 225 x 150 mm (text space 170 x 60 mm), in 37-38 lines.
Foliation: ff. v + 48 (f. i is the bookplate, ff. ii-iii are paper, ff. iv-v parchment, and ff. 45-46 parchment, and ff. 47-48 paper flyleaves). Burney pagination 1-88.
Collation: not practicable due to the tightness of the binding.
Script: Gothic.
Binding: Post-1600. Pre-Burney binding of polished red morocco; gilt spine; 18th century?; the joints repaired.

The library at Château d’Anet, with the usual mark (f. 1r), beneath which is 'No. 145' in pencil; no. 146 (according to the numbering in Bauchart 1886, p. 320), in the Anet sale, Pierre Gandouin, Paris, November 1724.
? Walter Clavell, F. R.S., elected 1704, admitted to the Inner Temple in 1700, very possibly in his sale, 29 March 1742, p. 95 lot 104.
? Unidentified owner: perhaps in Egerton sale, 1794, item 3891, priced £3 3s.
Sir Robert Smyth (b. 1744, d. 1802), 5th baronet, patron of the arts and radical: his armorial bookplate on the upper pastedown (f. i recto); his sale, 10 April 1809, lot 894.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
