ff. 2r-126v: L. Annaeus Seneca Maior (Seneca the Elder) (b. 54 BC, d. c. 39 AD), Controversiae (Disputes), with extensive marginal and interlinear glosses, beginning: 'Exigitis rem magis iocumdam'.

Decoration:
37 large and medium calligraphic initials in black or red with pen-flourishing in black or red (or occasionally purple), and some with yellow or gold details. Some of them incorporate motifs such as foliage, human faces, dragons and other beasts (e.g. ff. 2r, 8v, 12r). Many of the calligraphic initials are similar to the work of Jean Miélot (d. 1472), manuscript illuminator, scribe, and secretary to two Dukes of Burgundy (Philip the Good and his son, Charles the Bold) from 1449.
4 large or medium puzzle initials in red and blue (ff. 2r, 9r, 10v, 11v), with pen-flourishing in black or red with yellow details, and the first large initial (f. 2r) with silver and gold.

Foliation: ff. iv + 134 + 1* + 1**; ff. i-iii, 132-134 are modern paper flyleaves; ff. iv-1, 1*, 1**, 130-131 are paper flyleaves with watermarks dating to 1806; Burney index pasted on f. 134r; an early 19th-century note on the contents of the manuscript on f. 1r; Burney pagination in black ink, now crossed out.
Script: Gothic cursive.
Binding: Post-1600. Burney binding of brown diced calf with blind-tooling; spine re-backed at British Museum.

Provenance:
Charles Burney, (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar: probably acquired after 1806 since the paper flyleaves are watermarked with this date.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
