A shield of argent charged with a cross azur and four angled azur nails, of the Machiavelli family, quartered in 1 and 4 with 2 and 3 pales gules and checky argent and azur in three files (f. 59r).
Decoration:
Partial foliate border in gold and colours (f. 59r). Large gold initials on green, red, or blue grounds. Smaller initials with penwork decoration in blue and red or red and purple.

Notes by Paulus Manutius (b. 1512, d. 1574), printer and scholar of Venice (contemporary note, f. 2v, inscription: ‘Pauli Amicorum L(iber)’ (f. 2r); the library of the Manutius family dispersed after the death of Aldus in the last quarter of the 16th century.
Inscriptions ‘Antonius Alamanus’ (f. 1r); ‘Angelus Alamanus’ (f. 2r); ‘Hermannus Alamanus’ (f. 1v), possibly members of the Alamanni family of Florence.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney's library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
