Augustine, In Evangelium Ioannis tractatus (imprefect, lacking tracts 18 and 19 and substituting sermon 125) (ff. 1r-257r), Pseudo-Ildephonsus Toletanus or Pseudo-Maximus Taurinensis, Sermo VII in natale sanctae Mariae (imperfect) (f. 257v).
Decoration:
Large decorated initials in brown ink, some with a yellow wash and/or with orange or reddish-brown, mainly of interlace or geometric patterns; some with animal heads (ff. 88v, 223v). Most initials from f. 203r have thinner and finer outlines with foliage on a reddish-brown ground, and were probably executed by a different artist. Small simple red or brown initials.

Provenance:
The Camoldolese abbey of S. Marie de Poppiena (Poplenae) (founded 1099), in the diocese of Fiesole on the Arno plain: ‘hic liber est sancte marie de Popllena [in quid?] est librum beati Johannis super expositionem evangelii’ (f. 1r, upper margin), and a note of the consecration of the abbey church of S. Mariae de Poplina in 1100, during the reign of Pope Paschal II (reigned 1099 to 1118), (f. 2v).
Inscription regarding the consecration of the church of S. Michael de Puplena in 1206 (f. 2v).
Notes with dates 1318 and 1335 (ff. 1r, 1v).
Maffeo Pinelli (d. 1785) of Venice (listed in his inventory: see Morelli 1787, no. 7896), his sale, 2 March 1789, lot 12802, bought by Edwards for £1 5s.
James Edwards (b. 1756, d. 1816), book collector and bookseller.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
