Decoration: 4 full borders inhabited by putti, prophets, and other Renaissance motifs, in colours and gold (pp. 1: King David as a youth and as an adult, p. 139, p. 199, p. 470). 34 large historiated initials, in colours and gold (pp. 139, 199, 470), with partial borders (pp. 121: a figure crying to God illuminating Ps 141 “Voce mea”; p. 147: a bishop saint, pp. 214, 238, 246 (2x), 269, 270, 276 (2x), 287, 311, 321, 326, 327, 334, 345, 355, 357, 362, 369, 379, 391, 401, 407, 422, 430, 433, 442, 444, 464). 1 large historiated initial, in colours and gold, unfinished (p. 205). 5 large initials, in colours and gold, with a partial border (pp. 185, 206, 224, 334, 507). 3 bas-de-page miniatures, in colours and gold, each with a partial border (pp. 224, 269, 276). Small initials alternately red pen-flourished in blue, or vice versa. One-line initials alternately plain red or blue. According to the unpublished notes of A. C. de la Mare at the Bodleian Library, illuminated in the style of Boccardino il Vecchio (b. 1460, d. 1529)

Dimensions: 137 x 95 mm (text space 80 x 60 mm in two columns).
Foliation: pp. 572 (3 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning, and 2 at the end. 1 leaf is excised after p. 532, a bifolium is inserted before an incomplete quire ?6-1 (pp. 523-532, 6th leaf excised after p. 532).
Script: Gothic, written with vertical and horizontal catchwords.
Binding: Post-1600. French red leather over pasteboards; marbled endpapers; gilt edges; 18th century.

Provenance:
Made for the Vallumbrosan monastery of St. Salvio, possibly of Florence: rubric 'Incipit psalterium componitum secundum morem et ordinem Vallis Umbrose' (p. 1); the litany includes Salvius, ‘Sancte pater Benedicte’, John (Gualbert?), and Reparata; Benedict and Salvius are emphasised in the Sanctorale (pp. 269, 407); inscribed, 17th century, ‘De s(an)c(t)o Salvio’ (p. 172).

Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
