Illuminated Psalterwith a calendar preserving Dutch names of months/labours.
Contents:
· ff.2r-6v. Calendar; each month headed by itsname in red in Dutch (laumaent, sporkele, marte, etc.); major feasts in redinclude Nicasius; May and June missing due to the loss of a leaf.
· ff.7r-187. Psalms 1-150; a Beatus page isprobably missing: ‘Beatus vir’ has been added in red ‘lombardic’ capitals abovethe text on f. 7; Psalms 79:19-80:12, 97-8:3, and 109-110:5 are missing due tothe excision of leaves after ff. 106, 125, and 146.
· ff.187r-204v. The six ferial canticles followed by the Benedicite, Benedictus,Magnificat, Nunc dimittis, Te deum, and Quicumque vult.
· ff.204v-209r: Litany of saints, petitions,and seven collects; the litany includes St. Rumold of Malines.
Decoration: Three-sidesborders throughout, in red, blue, and gold, with the main colour alternatingbetween blue and red, with the line-endings of animal or human faces, the upperreddish orange, the lower green, with some of the borders incorporating birds,human figures, or hybrids.
10 calendar miniatureson gold grounds depicting the labours of the month, with gold 'KL' monogramseach within an architectural niche: a man with winged headgeardrinking and warming his feet at a fire; a woman holding a tall lighted taper;chopping a tree; a young man holding a foliate branch in each hand; scything;reaping; harvesting fruit/grapes(?); sowing; feeding hogs; killing a calf(?), (ff. 2-6v; leaf excised after f. 3 containedMay and June).
6 historiated initials in colours and gold marking major Psalm divisions depicting saints who named in gold letters above the text (f. 35r: Sts Peter and Paul, f. 53r: thedecollation of St. John the Baptist, the margin with a man standing holding onefoot with one hand, and balancing a spear on his nose, f. 69r: the martyrdomof St. Laurence, with a demon and a man with bellows in the margin, f. 70r: St. John theEvangelist boiled in a vat, the margin with a fool holding a club and loaf(?), f. 86v: St. Margaretemerging from the dragon, the margin with a wading-bird swallowing a frog, f. 127v: the stoningof St. Stephen, the margin with a woman standing on the shoulders of a manplaying bagpipes). Large and smallgold initials incorporated into the borders at the beginning of chapters andverses, and in tituli identifying the saints depicted in the historiatedinitials. Occasionally with human head (ff. 34r, 39r) thewhite ornament often in the shape of a wading-bird; one-line verse initials ingold, set in a column to the left of the text, linked by a continuousthree-sided border, alternately predominantly red or blue, the initialsinfilled with the other colour, with white ornament, the terminations of theborders alternately with orange or green human, semi-human, animal, or dragonheads; line-fillers in simple patterns in red blue and gold. Geometric line-fillers in blue, red, and gold.

Dimensions: 180 x 130 mm (text space 100 x 60 mm in onecolumn).
Foliation: ff. ii + 217 (ff. i-ii and 211-217 are modern paper flyleaves; ff. 1 and210 are parchment former pastedowns).
Script: Gothic.
Binding: 15th(?)-century English(?) binding of dark brown polishedcalf, tooled with a panel in blind, and with a gilt fleur de lis at eachcorner, with seven metal corner-pieces (one missing) and two metal catches onthe lower cover, with marks from corresponding clasps on the upper cover; theedges of the leaves painted with foliate designs; rebacked.

Provenance:
Owned in England by the15th century, when marginalia were added (ff. 104r, 159r, 196r), andstill there in the mid 16th century, when St. Thomas was erased inthe calendar.
Thomas Martin of Palgrave(b. 1697, d. 1771), antiquary: there is a note of his ownership in the 1840Burney catalogue, but the manuscript is without his signature; possiblyobtained from his estate by Ives. Cf. Grinke (1977), p. 42.Inscription 'C', upper left corner, f. 1r, possibly a former shelfmark.
John Ives (b. 1751, d. 1776), antiquary and herald, in 1772 (inscription andsignature 'J. Ives' (f. 1v); 'Bibliothoca Ivosiana' (f. 2); and 'BibliothocaIvosiana 1772' (f. 209): his sale, 6 March 1777, possibly lot 399.
Gustavus Brander (b. 1719/20, d. 1787), merchant and antiquary: his sale, 8February 1790, lot 1168, bought by Tyssen for £1 15s.
Samuel Tyssen (b. 1756, d. 1800), F.A.S.Mr Brydges: sold in his sale 4 March 1811, lot 482, to Smith for 2s 6d.
