ff. 2-11: AntoniusVegnatus, De re militari. Imperfect. Dedication to Antonio Barbarigo Doge of Venice, begins 'Tanta tua est cunctis in rebus precipue inreipublicae florentissimae gubernatione…' (f. 2r), ends '…Quae te principe sublimi digna sunt.' (f. 2v). Text, begins, 'Cogitaremecum solitus, serenissime princeps mala, quae nostris…', ends '…alteram conscriptorum, tertiam reliquorum, tertia classis reliquorum.'
Decoration: 2 large initials, 1 blue, and 1 red, each on agold ground with foliate decoration around the letter (ff. 2r, 3v); the arms ofAgostino Barbarigo (f. 2r, lower margin). Small gold initials on colouredgrounds.

Binding: Pre-1600. Original gold and blind tooled and stamped red-brown leather,rebacked. The paste-downs have printed text below. Watermark, inside lower cover, oftriangular scales in a circle topped by a cross, similar to C. M.Briquet, Les Filigranes: Dictionnaire historique des marques du papierdès leur apparition vers 1282 jusqu'en 1600, A Facsimile of the 1907edition with supplementary material, ed. by Allan Stevenson, 4 vols (Amsterdam:Paper Publications Society, 1968), no. 2565 (dated 1483 to Venice), but withoutthe circle below the cross.

Rev. Thomas Crofts (b. 1722, d. 1781) (hisinitials 'TC/E', centre of the inside upper cover): his sale, 7 April 1783 andforty-two following days, lot 8244, bought with lot 8243 by Wodhull for 12s 6d.
Michael Wodhull (b. 1740, d. 1816), bookcollector and poet (erased inscription in his format and the date 'May 27th1783', f. 1).
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D.,classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part ofBurney's library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
