- Title:
- Chinese Plan Of The City Of Peking.
- Scope & Content:
-
Major T. B. Jervis, F.R.S., London, 1843. Scale of British Statute Miles (about ten inches and one third to one mile) [approximately 1:6,100].
'To Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen, this fac-simile of a Chinese plan of the Tatar, or inner City, Nuyching and the Imperial Palace Kingtoo of Peking, or Chun Thien Foo, the Northern Residence of the Court, or Capital of the Chinese Empire, is most respectfully inscribed, with Her Majesty's most gracious permission, by Her Majesty's faithful Servant, T. B. Jervis.' 'The original document from which this Plan was Lithographed, was brought from Peking by an Italian Missionary, who had resided there many years, and purchased by Sir Woodbine Parish, at Naples in Novr. 1842, by whom it was placed at the disposal of Her Majesty's Government. The Russian Government had a Plan executed with considerable care, by Father Hyacinth, some years Archimandrite with the Russian Mission at Peking in 1812. The Eminent French Geographer Delisle, in conjunction with Pingré, at an earlier date 1758, published a small and less perfect Plan from the information of the Jesuits, and a fourth rude sketch in wood cut, which is common enough in China, was recently sent to this Country by the Missionary Guzlaff, but the present appears in some respects more complete than those above mentioned and possesses greater claim to notice, as a curious and authentic specimen of Chinese science and art.' Lithographed & Printed under the direction of Major T. B. Jervis, F.R.S. London, 1st May 1843. Former Foreign Office 2446 copy.
