This volume mainly consists of newspaper cuttings. The cuttings which are from identifiable publications are from The Times, the Manchester Guardian, the Pall Mall Gazette, and the Standard, but the sources of some of the cuttings are not identifiable. The cuttings mostly relate to the Secretary of State for India John Morley and India Office affairs.
It includes cuttings relating to the following:
- Debates in the House of Commons and the House of Lords in which Morley took part.
- Speeches given by Morley, in the Public Hall at Arbroath to his constituents, at the Indian Civil Service Dinner Club, and at the fourth business meeting of the Imperial Press Conference.
- Morley entering the House of Lords as Viscount Morley of Blackburn.
- The visit of the Prime Minister of Nepal Maharajah Chandra Shamsher Jang Rana Bahadur to the United Kingdom.
- The installation of Morley as Chancellor of Manchester University.
- Morley’s meeting with a deputation of Indian Muslims from the London branch of the All-India Moslem League.
- The murder of Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Hutt Curzon Wyllie, Political Aide-de-Camp to the Secretary of State for India, by an Indian student, and Wyllie’s funeral.
- The formal opening of the new chemical laboratories at Manchester University by Morley.
The volume also includes a few cuttings relating to Sir Arthur Hirtzel, including cuttings concerning the following:
- India Office appointments, including the appointment of Hirtzel as Secretary in the Political and Secret Department.
- The birth of Hirtzel’s daughter Miriam on 17 February 1908.
In addition, the volume includes a few other types of documents, such as:
- A programme for Wagner’s The Ring of the Niblung, part of the Royal Opera Covent Garden Winter Opera Season 1908.
- A sale catalogue for the library of the late Robinson Ellis, Corpus Professor in Latin at the University of Oxford.
- A note by Hirtzel dated 22 and 23 August 1909, regarding Hirtzel writing to Morley with reasons why he wished to remain in his present position.
On each folio in the volume on which there is a cutting or other document, references have been written to pages (not folios) in Sir Arthur Hirtzel’s diaries [Mss Eur D1090/1 to Mss Eur D1090/4] with entries which relate to these cuttings or other documents.
