- Letters to Strachey from Edward, 2nd Baron Clive, during his Governorship of Madras. Includes material on: the careers of Strachey's sons Henry and Richard, and of his nephew George; the war against Tipu and the surrender of Seringapatam; Clive's initial impression of his colleagues on the Council and his reorganisation of the Secretary's Office; his favourable opinion of Josiah Webb, successively Secretary and Chief Secretary to Government; his good relations with Richard, Marquess Wellesley, the Governor-General of Bengal, and his decision to prolong his stay in Madras at Wellesley's behest; his resentment at the interference of the Court of Directors, especially in the appointment of top officials; his satisfaction at the achievements of his government, particularly the increase of revenue. Also one letter to Henry Strachey (Junior), dated 7 Oct 1798, two to Lord Powis, dated 13 Apr and 2 Sep 1800, and copies of letters to the Chairman of the Court of Directors and to the Earl of Dartmouth, both dated 1802.
