- Title:
- Keyes Collection: Photographs album recording a journey in Russian Turkestan. Photographer: Sir Terence Humphrey Keyes
- Scope & Content:
-
Red cloth bound photograph album measuring 144 mm x 262 mm, inscribed on front endpaper: July to September 1904 journey to Russian Turkestan and return to Seistan via an unexplored route. The album contains prints inserted two to a page in aperture mounts, captioned in ink on album page beneath the prints. The photographs are generally in good condition, although the binding of the album is shaken and fragile. The album contains snapshot views, presumably by Keyes himself, of scenes in Bukhara, Tashkent, Samarkand, Gaisur, Isfideb and Daruksh.
Brigadier-General Sir Terence Humphrey Keyes (1877-1939), served in the Indian Army 1897-1903, when he transferred to the Indian Political Service. The journey recorded here took place while Keyes was serving as Vice-Consul of Seistan. Keyes later served in Balochistan from 1921-28, as British Envoy to the Court of Nepal 1928, resident at Gwalior 1928-29, Agent to the Governor-General, Western India 1929 and Resident at Hyderabad 1930-33 (see OIOC Photo 1110).
