Psalter and Book of Hours, Use of Arras, with prayers added in the mid-14th century (ff. 1v-3v).

Decoration:
The manuscript belongs to a wider group attributed to a workshop active in Arras at the end of the 13th century (see Randall , Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts (1989), I, p. 144).
24 small miniatures with astrological signs and activities of the months, in colours and gold, for the calendar (ff. 4v-16r).
3 full-page miniatures, each divided into four compartments, in colours and gold, preceding the Psalter (ff. 17v, 18v, 19v); 1 probably missing after f. 17. 1
7 large historiated initials with three-sided borders, in colours and gold, for the Psalms, Litany and Hours of the Virgin (ff. 20r, 53v, 75v, 96r, 117r, 144r, 169r, 197r, 269v, 284r, 292v, 302v, 307v, 311r, 314v, 318r, 324v).
Smaller decorated initials with extensions into the margins on which animals are perched, in colours and gold.
Small initials in gold with blue pen-flourishing or in blue with red pen-flourishing.
Line-fillers decorated in gold, red and blue.

Calendar in French from diocese of Arras: St Vaast mentioned for all his feasts, sometimes in red letters.
Claude de Valgrand, 17th century: inscribed 'Claude de Valgrand' and 'Cosson' (f. [iii] recto).
Inscription: 'Empt. Biitt 1623', accompanied by illegible initials(?) (ff. [ii] recto, 1r).
Inscription, 16th century: 'Amour par tout' (f. [ii] recto) and 'Amour par tout / Par amour tout' (inside lower cover).
Bertram Ashburnham (b. 1797, d. 1878), 4th earl of Ashburnham; his Appendix Ms. 28; bought from Rodd, 21 January 1847, for £31.10.0, according to the handwritten annotations in the BL Manuscript Department's copy of Catalogue of the Manuscripts at Ashburnham Place: Appendix (London: Hodgson, 1853).
Bertram Ashburnham, 5th earl of Ashburnham: his sale, May 1897, bought by Yates Thompson together with the entire Ashburnham Appendix: book-plate with an inscribed number 'From the Library of the Earl of Ashburnham Appendix no. XXVIII May 1897' (inside upper cover).
Henry Yates Thompson (b. 1838, d. 1928), collector of illuminated manuscripts and newspaper proprietor: with his book-plate inscribed '[MS] 62 / £bse.e.e [i.e. £160.0.0] / [bought from the] Earl of / Ashburnham / May 1897' (inside upper cover).
Bequeathed to the British Museum in 1941 by Mrs Henry Yates Thompson.
